I am not really a hotel-loving person. I usually like to be out and about exploring, so my instincts tell me I just need a good place to lay my head at night. However, our stay at Basecamp Hotel in South Lake Tahoe made me re-think my lack of love for hotels. This place has style, warmth and great service!
South Lake Tahoe Tourism
South Lake Tahoe spans both California and Nevada and is a premier vacation spot in northern California. It is impossible not to love it, no matter what season it is. We came during the winter time when it was covered in snow. In the spring and summer, people love to come to the beaches around the lake and enjoy water sports. No matter the month, coming on vacation at South Lake Tahoe is a great idea! There are tons of great Instagram accounts to inspire your trip like staylocal.tahoe, laketahoeofficial or tahoesouth, which all share great tips and places to explore in Lake Tahoe.
Basecamp Hotel in South Lake Tahoe Location
First off, Basecamp Hotel actually has three different locations. They are South Lake Tahoe, CA; Tahoe City, CA; and Boulder, CO. We stayed at their South Lake Tahoe location and thought it was amazing. We were only a 5 minute walk from the lake, where you can find Lakeside Beach and a 5-10 minute walk to the Heavenly Gondola, where you can take the cable car up the mountain and either catch an incredible view or go skiing/snowboarding (in winter) up at Heavenly Mountain. The gondola is open year-round as long as conditions are safe, and the price varies throughout the year. Winter time seems to be the most expensive.
Since Basecamp Hotel is so close to the gondola, that also means it is within walking distance to all the great restaurants and shops located in Heavenly Village. Just FYI, parking in Heavenly Village is a nightmare, so parking at Basecamp Hotel then walking over will save you a lot of headache and money in parking fees.
Accommodations at Basecamp Hotel in South Lake Tahoe
The interior and exterior design of Basecamp Hotel is modern and stylish. It is evident that this is an older motel that has been renovated into something truly beautiful. It gives you all the warm, mountain-style vibes you could want while staying amidst the big redwoods.
Their rooms range from one queen, two queens, one king, king balcony, and king suite. The interesting thing about Basecamp Hotel is they also offer some unique accommodations that are reminiscent of hostel stays in Europe. They have family rooms, explorers club and the great indoors. The explorers club accommodates up to 8 people so you can stay with your group of friends. The great indoors includes a king bed that is inside a tent! There is literally a tent pitched in the room along with some camping chairs. This room is ski/board friendly and has an area to dry your wet clothes. Last, but not least, is the mountain view suite which has a queen bed, an additional sofa bed, microwave and refrigerator. The bath room also has a bathtub.
We stayed in a standard queen room for one night and booked through hotwire.com. We paid roughly $230.00, which was a great deal compared to the costs of hotels in the area. Especially after I consider how much they offered and how nice it was.
The room was pretty standard and had all the essentials. There was free coffee and tea, a mini fridge and a television. The bathroom had soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion. Everything was very clean and comfortable! I personally loved the interior design in our room and at the entire hotel.

The hotel provides complimentary coffee and water in the lobby, which are available during check in and check out. There are a number of decks guests can relax and socialize at. The lobby deck is right outside the lobby with a fire pit, where guests can make s’mores! There is the Spa Deck which is right above the lobby. There is the Mountain View Deck which has great views of the mountains (hence the name) and is available for private events. There is the Courtyard Deck right above the Beer Garden that overlooks the courtyard below. Finally, there is the picnic deck.
There are tons of fun activities to do at the hotel, like table tennis, corn-hole, toasting s’mores and just meeting new people. They also have an awesome air stream on site, and it will make all your millennial Instagram dreams come true! It, along with some other places on the property, are available for rent for events.
There is a continental breakfast served each day from 7-10 am and it has all your standard breakfast supplies. There is cereal, toast, oranges, biscuits, hard boiled eggs and if you are early enough, sausage. Their coffee is good, as well! This breakfast is served in the Beer Garden.
The Beer Garden at Basecamp Hotel in South Lake Tahoe
This is a pub that is on the hotel grounds but is also open to the public. It is amazing how full this place gets in the evening! There are a number of craft beers served here and it is a great spot to socialize with other hotel guests. The atmosphere is a friendly one and all the staff were great.
Overall, I would recommend Basecamp Hotel. I think they had so much to offer at a very affordable price. Lake Tahoe is not a cheap place to vacation, so this is a great option for those who are on a budget but still want nice accommodations. Their staff was friendly and helpful. The location was great for exploring South Lake Tahoe. I hope to be able to explore Basecamp Hotel in Tahoe City in the future!
